Salmon fish is high in demand in India because of the potential health benefits it supposedly has. As you get ready to search for the fish in market, you might be having some simple questions.

This is a list of FAQs on salmon fish.

What is salmon fish called in India?

Salmon fish, originally are not a native to India and Indian subcontinent. Hence, the salmon fish that is so popular in the West is not available in Indian markets. However, Rawas is known as an Indian salmon and which has a white meat and found along the western coast of the country.

Where can I get salmon fish in India?

Salmon fish is not available in India as it is not native to the subcontinent. However, you can search for Rawas in your local market which is otherwise known as Indian salmon.

What is salmon fish called in Tamil Nadu?

Salmon fish isn’t a native of India and hence does not have any any Tamil name since it is not a native of the subcontinent. However, the local Indian salmon is called as Kaala Meen in Tamil.

What is salmon fish called in Bengali?

Salmon fish has no Bengali name and will be called as ‘salmon fish’ in local Bengali markets of Bengal and Kolkata. The Indian salmon will be called as “rawas” in Hindi.

The fish is largely available in North Atlantic and Pacific Ocean and is certainly not a native of India and Indian subcontinent.

What is the price of salmon fish in India per kg?

Indian salmon fish or rawas can cost anywhere between ₹600 and ₹1200 per kg depending on the quality, freshness, size and local availability. The European variant (originally called as salmon) which is highly prized is not available in Indian markets.

What are Few Alternatives for Salmon in India?

Pangasius (also called Pangas in Bengal and Odisha) is a good alternative. However, I would recommend fishes that are sourced locally from ponds and rivers. These can be small fishes with local names. They are available in abundance in the market and inexpensive.

However, do keep in mind that fishes sourced from rivers that are fed with pollutants from factories may contain microplastics and are extremely harmful for human body.

In big cities like Mumbai and Kolkata, you may get canned salmon in hypermarkets and supermarkets. However, I personally feel this craze for salmon must stop. There is no point in blindly aping the western part of the world when in India we have local markets filled with live, indigenous fishes with similar health benefits at a fraction of the cost.

Ending Notes

I hope this FAQ helps.

Now that you know that salmon fish (as found in the western world) is not available in India. You may buy the Indian variant which are quite expensive.

Instead, try to eat freshwater fish that are available locally for the best health benefits.
